Prior to the development of implants, missing teeth were only replaceable using bridges or removable dentures. Bridges require crown placement on surrounding teeth in the area. Most patients find removable dentures uncomfortable & undesirable.
Implants are titanium fixtures that replace the root of the tooth. They bond to the jawbone and act as a foundation for an artificial tooth, a permanent bridge, or unstable removable dentures. Implants can mimic the look and feel of natural teeth.
Not everyone is a candidate for a dental implant. Implant success is dependent on adequate bone quantity & quality as well as a strong immune system. In all cases, dental implants require excellent oral hygiene and regular professional cleanings.
Implant procedure
Surgery is required to place the implant fixture. If inadequate bone or soft tissue contours exist to house a dental implant, bone or soft tissue grafting may be required before implant placement. Patients typically experience pain-free surgery thanks to the use of powerful local anesthetics that block nerve receptors. General anesthetics are also available to allow patients to sleep through the surgery. Prescription medication is typically used to ensure patients’ comfort during recovery.
Following the procedure, a short period of implant immobility is required to allow adequate healing. Once the implant is strongly bonded to the bone, a titanium post (abutment) is inserted into the implant allowing fabrication and attachment of a crown.
